Description

Diagrams is a diagram editor for Mac that helps you increase the understanding of your structures and processes through visualization. Its approachable design, clean interface, crisp visual style, and streamlined canvas interactions allow you to produce beautiful diagrams and integrate them into your workflows in no time.

“Diagrams is extremely straightforward in what it aims to do, so you don’t have to spend time trying to understand how the app works.”
— Filipe Espósito, 9to5Mac

“Diagrams is a great app for creating flowchart-style diagrams. It’s Mac-native, and it shows. It conforms to all of the guidelines for a well-designed Mac app.”
— John Voorhees, MacStories

HOW IT WORKS

Interactive Canvas — Create diagrams on the canvas, the key area of the app, through direct manipulation of diagram objects. The canvas is fully interactive and employs powerful layout features that help streamline your workflows.

Elements & Relationships — Unlike generic vector graphics tools, Diagrams is specifically optimized for structured diagrams consisting of elements and relationships. By leveraging these core building blocks, you’ll create diagrams more quickly with no fiddling around.

Types — Each element and relationship is associated with a type that defines its meaning and its visual style. Utilize reusable types to make your diagrams more consistent and comprehensive.

Palettes — A palette is a collection of types attached to each new diagram. You can pick from built-in presets, customize existing palettes, or craft personalized palettes that contain only the types you need for your particular use cases.

The app encourages you to assign meaning to types, but you can decide to which extent you want to embrace it. Opt for the universal palette without any particular semantics, or make use of your very specific palette — or something in between.

Almost there...

Nice simple tool to use which I def. appreciate.

**Text box/notes with bullet point functionality: I have discovered I sometimes require to make the diagram with notes underneath. I need to make some bullet point notes in plain text box in order to explain certain things or for followup on the above diagram topic which I cannot do.

** Elements with multiple lines and bullet point functionality: I also would like to be able to make multiple lines within a diagram element along with bullet points which I cannot do. There might be a little more to the element which I want to group together in one box but with bullets.

Developer Response ,

Hi there, thank you for your kind words and feature requests. Both the support for dedicated text boxes and improvements of bullet points in regular elements are already on our list but are not part of the bucket for the upcoming version. In the meantime, you can insert multiple lines in elements and use them as bullet points. To insert a new line, press Option+Enter (⌥↩︎) or Ctrl+Enter (⌃↩︎). This approach will get even more convenient with the upcoming version, which will bring support for left-aligned text. Thanks for using Diagrams! –Lukas

So Close

I was VERY excited to see this app and immediately purchased it as I was in the middle of a project that needed a diagram. This is one easiest to use diagram apps, BUT there are some pretty significant issues. First, you are very limited with color seletion, which becomes an issue is you are mapping with numerous variable. Second, there is not a text editor. I cannot make words bold, underlined, ect. That is a problem. Third, they need to make it easy to lable the diagram. the way it is set up now, you have to use a box and place the title in that. Not a great idea. I am actually a bit shocked there are some pretty primary functions missing and hope they are quick to fix this. I am not expecting an app with a multitude of editing power, but simple editing, shaping, and color options are basic and should already be part of this app. If they do not fix this in the near future, I will go back to other apps I have used previouly. It is a waste of time to try to find so many work arounds.

UPDATE: recent updates have improved the flexibility and potential of this app. some of the primary issues I ran into have been addressed and I am able to add this into my workflow more often. If you need to make diagrams/flow charts then you should check this out. Easy to use and the end product looks great. Thanks for continuing to improve the app. (if you are considering moving to a subscription model do not do it)

Developer Response ,

Thanks for taking the time to update your review! We’re glad that you appreciate the progress we made with the app since its initial release two years ago and that you decided to give Diagrams a second chance. However, we have a lot more planned, and many of the requests from your original review are still on our list in one way or another. And we can’t wait to get to the design and implementation of those features. As always, keep an eye out for updates! –Lukas

Excellent

If you just need to make a nice clean flow chart, this is a wonderfully clear and simple application that produces beautiful output. It is astonishing to see how expensive some software out there is for these kind of functionality, and the very reasonable price to unlock this, after testing its functionality is worth it. One very nice aspect is that when you export the vector PDF, you can easily bring this into another vector graphics editor such as Affinity Designer etc., and edit any element of the final product in every way.

Areas for future improvement: 1) better resolution on exported image (or ideally some different options for this). You can get around this by exporting the PDF instead and saving this as an image at desired resolution. 2) the "pallette" is not a pallete, it is a pop-up window where one can customize the tools. Consider offering a tool pallete for easy addition of specific kinds of objects onto the screen without the current two-clicks needed with the button to add an object.

Developer Response ,

Thank you for your review of Diagrams! We're glad to hear that you found the app clear, simple, and affordable. We appreciate your feedback on the resolution of exported images, and we'll consider this for future updates. Regarding palettes, they are a core concept in Diagrams, allowing users to configure and reuse element and relationship types in their diagrams. While we don't have plans to change this concept, we are always looking for ways to improve user interactions for inserting new elements. For more information on palettes, please check out our blog post "A Guide to Palettes." Thank you again for your support! –Lukas
