The 9th update of 2024 has some awesome features focused on improving GIFs and Videos.

New:
- GIFs/Videos in Big Preview Mode will only start playing when they are mostly on screen. No more scrolling and seeing GIFs that are already halfway done playing!
- Settings (including themes!) are now synced to your iCloud account so that if you get a new device or have to re-install, everything will still be customized to your liking.
- Adds setting to automatically unmute GIFs/videos in Big Preview mode as you scroll in Settings > Posts
- Adds favorites button as an option for the action bar
- Adds setting to control mute behavior on GIF posts
- App icons will now respond correctly to dark mode. I also added a new orangered and new blue icon.
- Adds setting to control the gesture for how comments are collapsed: single tap, double tap, two finger tap, or disabled altogether

Improved:
- When opening a GIF/Video from Big Preview Mode, the post will show the GIF/Video at the same place on the timeline. For those of you who may not like this behavior, there is now a setting to always start GIFs/Videos from the beginning in Settings > Posts
- GIFs and videos that are unmuted in Big Preview mode will stay un-muted when you open the post

Fixed:
- Fixes issue where iOS dictation would insert a weird character that is displayed on reddit.com
- Changed some icons for the action bar to ensure continuity in the visual style
- Fixes issue where placeholders would be shown with thumbnails turned off

- Safari extension now opens links automatically by default.
- Opening the extension (tap aA in Safari then "Open in Narwhal 2") now has a setting to prompt you when opening reddit.com links in Safari

Here are a few tweaks/fixes from the most recent large update:

- Adds "Open in YouTube" as an option when you long press on a post
- Content filters now apply to search results
- Fixes issue with RedGIFs not loading
- Does not highlight your own comments as new comments since last view
- Only highlights comments if it has been a few minutes since your last view

Thanks everyone for bearing with me. I have some awesome new features for you as part of the fourth release of 2024!

- Safari extension to open Reddit links directly in Narwhal. You will have to turn this on in your device's Settings app.
- When viewing a post for a subsequent time, new comments since the last time you visited will automatically be highlighted.
- Highlighting is turned on by default, but you can turn it off and adjust behavior in Settings > Comments
- Also, instead of highlighting the entire row by default, you may choose to only change the color of the time instead.
- Collapsing comments will now persist between multiple views of the same post. You can turn this behavior off in Settings > Comments
- Adds setting to choose the type of gesture used to collapse self post text. Choose one of the following in Settings > Posts: Single tap, double tap, two finger tap, or disable altogether
- Adds "Open in Youtube" to the ... menu for posts that are YouTube videos
- Adds new fun app icon courtesy of /u/repapap

Bug fixes:
- Attempts to fix issue where Narwhal would cause background audio to stop playing
- Fixes issue with selecting text when replying to very long comments
- Fixes keyboard issue where you wouldn't be able to see the input box when sending a message on iPad.

Fixed a couple quick bugs from the latest update to keep your Reddit browsing experience the best it can be:

- Fixes issue where self text previews would be shown for spoiler posts
- Fixes issue with the "Use bold font for titles" setting not working 100% of the time

We are switching to year based version numbers! Welcome to version 1 of 2024 :D

New:
- When in big preview mode, self posts will now show a few lines of text as a preview. There is also a setting to turn this off if you don't like it :)
- Videos will now respond to horizontal swipes to scrub through the duration of the video just like GIFs!
- Tapping Home in the action bar will now scroll to top if you are already on your home feed. Tapping it again will refresh the feed
- Adds option to add a subreddit directly to a multireddit from the ... button
- Adds setting to control whether hide all above/hide read posts hides stickied posts
- Adds option to have the app start on a multireddit
- The Narwhal app icon will now have shortcuts to your home feed and your favorites when you long press the icon

Improved:
- Scrubbing through GIFs will now work above and below the GIF in the black space
- Improves big preview mode when using single column mode on iPad. Very tall images/videos will now scale to not take over the entire screen.

Fixed:
- Fixes loading video short links like this one (https://v.redd.it/243q8tpgx7cc1)
- Fixes issue where search screen would disappear without you asking!

We are changing the default video player back to not loop videos. Instead, when a video ends, it will go to the beginning of the video and pause playback. You can tap the play video if you want to watch it again. For those of you who would like videos to loop, there is now a setting for it in Settings > Posts

Right after I released the last version, Reddit changed their API with no warning and Narwhal started crashing. I worked around this issue on my end and hopefully all Reddit API issues are now fixed in this version. I'm doing my best to work around the quirks in the Reddit API so please bear with me.

I've attempted to fix the many issues that have cropped up with the Reddit API over the past week. If you've had trouble switching accounts, seeing default subreddits in your home feed, or trouble posting content, this should hopefully address that. If you are still having issues, please come post in /r/narwhalapp. Many new features are coming soon, but I wanted to get this bug fix out as soon as possible.

Reddit is now charging Narwhal to display Reddit content, so we have added a mandatory subscription into the app. Yes, we hate this just as much as you do. We totally understand if you do not want to pay a subscription and we hope you enjoyed using Narwhal. We are working on many new features and will have more updates very soon!

Apologies about the iPad reset bug in the previous build. This is now fixed! Here are the full release notes:

- Adds new layout option for iPad. If you want to use a single column, which is essentially the iPhone app sized to fit the iPad screen, you can now turn that on in Settings > General > iPad Layout
- Tapping a thumbnail will now show media only with comments hidden at the bottom
- Adds setting to turn this off for those who prefer the old behavior
- Fixes crash that causes app to reload when going into background on iPads running iOS 17
- Fixes issue with reddit videos not showing natively in app
- Fixes issue with certain images not loading
